Nicole Miller Print Project Collection

Each Spring semester, the sophomore class works with fashion designer Nicole Miller, and are randomly assigned a printed material. We are then asked to create one look from whatever it is we recieve. I was randomly given six yards of floral material, and from that, designed a collection of four looks.

My semester was surrounded by fabric manipulation, which is the main source of inspiration behind this collection. Mainly, I was attracted to the use of elastic thread. And how, when you sew, it gathers the material and pulls it in different directions.

Using this idea, I decided my garments were not going to be patterned and cut. Instead, I choose to use the whole bolt of material, and with my stitching, I created a grid, and gave the material its shape to wrap and curve around the body.

The striped jersey is added to balance with the chaos of the print. I took inspiration from a Japanese technique, where they line wool garments with contrasting materials, then wash the garments. The wool shrinks, and the lining then becomes an exposed detail of the garment on the exterior.

I embody this technique with the stripes, using my shrinking method with the elastic thread only on the exterior shell of the garment, and exposing the striped lining.

I also made leather gloves and belts to complete my looks and finish my styling.
